The Cocoon Chill is a modern classic developed by Sealy, a US company selling mattresses since 1881. If you’re looking for one of the longest-standing companies in the business, Sealy is a strong contender.
The classic Cocoon mattress was a superb flagship product, but Sealy has now uprated this with the Cocoon Chill. By adding phase-change material, this mattress – as the name hints – should appeal to anyone who sleeps hot.
This all-foam mattress offers a choice of firmness levels, rated 4 and 6 on the firmness scale.
Before we probe the construction, feel, and firmness, who should buy this mattress, and who should look for an alternative?
3.5 out of 5.0 stars
Who Should Buy The Cocoon by Sealy
- All hot sleepers will appreciate the phase-change materials mentioned above. You can benefit from memory foam without enduring the overheating that can accompany some memory foam mattresses
- Motion isolation is exceptional. If you tend to wake up when your partner moves and the bed rustles, you should find almost no noise issuing from the Cocoon even if you have a restless sleep partner
- Are you a sucker for the cradling sensation of memory foam? If so, you’ll love the Sealy Cocoon Chill
Who Should Avoid The Cocoon by Sealy
- Do you struggle to get in and out of bed? You could find the Cocoon doesn’t provide quite enough edge support for comfort. This lack of reinforcement also raises problems if you sleep near the side of the bed or spend a lot of time reading when propped up near the edge of the bed
- Heavyweight sleepers weighing over 230 pounds will probably sink too deeply into this mattress. It offers inadequate support and you should look elsewhere
As long as you don’t fall into the latter 2 categories, what can expect from the Cocoon mattress in terms of firmness and feel? We’ll explain that by outlining the way it’s composed…

1.0 out of 5.0 starsThe most uncomfortable mattress ever. Aggravated my lower back pain, even more, won’t recommend it. 🙁 Also, they will only do a 30-day policy here so if you’re past that they won’t care.

1.0 out of 5.0 starsLike others, I too had the problem where after 3 days it still is not even close to fully expanded. I think they vacuum sealed it before it was fully cured. Time to look for another brand.

1.0 out of 5.0 starsI purchased a “Cocoon” mattress from Sealy, maybe a month ago, 6 weeks at best. I tried 1 night on the mattress & knew I couldn’t, or wouldn’t be able to sleep on it!!!!! I immediately, contacted for a return & they told me, they would pick up the mattress and refund me the $$$$. But, hey guess what, it’s been over 2 weeks and the thing is still up in my bedroom, ready & waiting on these people to pick it up, and issue me a refund!!!! I mean, I got it on sale for a little less than $400.00, but still!!!!! I should not get stuck with a mattress that I cannot use!!!! I would, never, ever recommend this company to anyone, the customer service, really sucks!!! I just know, after having a small service business, since 1988. If I had run my service business the way this is run; I’d have been out of business 33 years ago!!!!!!! Now, comes the attorney!!! It may only be $388 or…….., but it is still my $$$, I still have a brand new product wasting space in my home, but it shouldn’t be this way!!!!!!
Construction

- Support Layers
Cover
The polyester and cotton blend cover is breathable and feels soft against the skin.
The phase-change material mentioned above is laced into this layer. This will draw heat away from your body as you sleep, ideal for hot sleepers the world over.
Comfort Layers
The Cocoon Chill comes with a choice of firmness settings. Both the medium-soft and extra-firm models come with 2” of memory foam in the comfort layer. The foam is quite low-density by the standards of memory foam so you won’t get particularly close-contouring. The inbuilt benefit, though, is that you’ll sleep cooler.
If you opt for the plushness of the medium-soft, you get an additional 2” layer of higher-density polyfoam. This provides a welcome extra layer of cushioning for anyone prioritizing comfort in a mattress.
Support Layers
The high-density polyfoam you’d expect in any all-foam mattress provides a very supportive foundation to this mattress. The sleeping surface feels extremely stable, too.
8” of polyfoam should give you all the support you need. You shouldn’t sink too deeply into this mattress, either. The exception is heavyweight sleepers. As outlined above, the Cocoon Chill is not the right for anyone weighing over 230 pounds.

Firmness and Feel
The Cocoon Chill is available in 2 firmness levels:
- Medium-soft: The medium-soft (4) version of this mattress offers close contouring. This should reduce pressure points while still delivering the traditional hugging sensation you expect from memory foam
- Extra-firm: The extra-firm (7) version of the Cocoon Chill gives you a sensation of sleeping on rather than in the bed
Mattress Height
The Cocoon Chill is 10” thick. This renders it a regular height for a foam mattress.
You should watch out for weak edge support. If you spend lots of time near the edges of the bed, this is reason enough not to buy the Cocoon Chill.
Verdict
Sealy is one of the most reputable companies in a crowded vertical. As manufacturers started selling more mattresses directly to consumers, Sealy naturally followed.
While we have been long-time fans of the classic Cocoon, we feel the phase-change materials introduced into this model make it a worthwhile upgrade. Anyone who tends to get overheated in bed will appreciate the way heat is sucked away from the body allowing you to run cool through the night without constantly waking up.
You shouldn’t wake if your partner moves around in bed, either. Top-notch motion isolation prevents any annoying noises.
While the Cocoon Chill is certainly not the cheapest mattress you can find, you get great overall value in an all-foam sensation.
