Puffy has a suite of mattresses to suit all tastes. The Puffy Royal is the premium model in the trio of best-selling Puffy’s.
This brand is a relative newcomer to the bed-in-a-box industry. The flagship all-foam Puffy was released in 2017.
So, is this luxe foam mattress something you’ll be adding to your bedroom this year?
Before you decide, a few words on who this mattress would work well for and who should give it a miss.

4.5 out of 5.0 stars
Who Should Buy The Puffy Royal
- Any smaller sleepers will benefit strongly from the Puffy Royal. With a plush sleep surface and separate foam zones, you shouldn’t experience any enervating pressure points that can affect lightweight sleepers on firmer mattresses
- Are you a light sleeper prone to easily waking at the slightest disturbance? With outstanding motion isolation, you’ll get no noise issuing from the Royal
- If you sleep hot and you enjoy the cradling feeling of memory foam, the Puffy Royal manages to impart this hugging feeling without excessive heat retention
Who Should Avoid The Puffy Royal
- Larger sleepers will find the Puffy Royal, like most foam mattresses, lacks the requisite support for proper spinal alignment
- Do you sleep on your stomach? If so, the effectiveness of the memory foam could render the Puffy Royal unsuitable. You might find you sink down too much in the hip area leading to potential aches and pains
So, assuming you’re not too large and you don’t sleep mainly on your stomach, how does the Puffy Royal fare in terms of construction?
Construction
- Cover
- Comfort Layers
- Transitional Layer
- Support Layer
Cover
As with all Puffy mattresses, you can unzip the cover and remove it completely. The cover is stain-resistant, but the removable nature simplifies cleaning further. Either hand wash the cover or slip it in the washing machine. Limit machine washing to a few times each year.
Certified to Oeko-Tex Standard 100, the cover contains no harmful substances so you can sleep with confidence.
Comfort Layers
The upper 1.5” layer of memory foam is packed with cooling beads. This initial comfort layer is one of the reasons why hot sleepers who insist upon memory foam flock to this mattress. You get all the benefits of closely-conforming memory foam without the usual heat retention.
Beneath this comes 2” of even more responsive memory foam followed by 2” of polyfoam. The polyfoam provides valuable extra contouring.
Cumulatively, the foams in these comfort layers cradle your body to mitigate pressure points while easing you toward slumberland.
Transitional Layers
1.5” of convoluted polyfoam is used to boost airflow while providing a smooth transition to the base.
The transitional layer is divided into 5 zones. The hips and lower back benefit from more firmness. There are softer spots under the head and neck along with the shoulders.
Support Layer
7” of polyfoam gives you a solid base. This is key for proper spinal alignment.
The high-density foam should also stop bottoming out.

Firmness and Feel
Puffy doesn’t state a firmness level for this mattress. We feel it’s medium-firm because it conforms fairly closely and also gives you the cradling feeling of sleeping in the mattress rather than wallowing on top of it.
If you suffer from pressure points in bed, the innovative zoned layer serves up wonderful lumbar support. If you sleep on your side or back, this is especially valuable.
As with all Puffy mattresses, users weighing over 230 pounds might find there’s a bit too much sinkage with the Royal.
Mattress Height
The tallest mattress in the Puffy line at 14”, stands much higher than the average all-foam mattress.
Since the support core is roughly comparable in size to most similar mattresses, there’s still plenty of space for the comfort layer that makes this model so attractive.
One thing to note if you use fitted sheets: the height of this mattress means you’ll need to use sheets with deep pockets.
Verdict
If you weigh less than 230 pounds and you’re looking for an affordable yet comfortable mattress that will last for years, the Puffy Royal makes a smart bet.
If you tend to sleep hot, you might have thought memory foam mattresses were out of the question. The Royal proves that not all memory foam is plagued by significant heat retention. Get that trademark cradling, then, without overheating.
Side and back sleepers will find this top-of-the-line Puffy supportive while still also delivering ample comfort.
The Royal is a great all-rounder that should give you years of faithful service without breaking the bank.
