Memphis Non-Profit Healthcare Company Backed Down To MLK50
A nonprofit news outlet in Memphis, MLK50, started investigating Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare back in 2019. The investigation focused on the Memphis-based hospital system’s debt collection practices. After enough publicity, the company erased almost $12 million in obligations for low-income consumers who were already struggling with credit cards and other debts.
The hospital filed thousands of notices writing off the debt of consumers. The Memphis company also set up a charity to assist Memphis citizens who needed the most help.
Associates of Memphis Non-Profit Hospital System Consumed the Courts With Lawsuits
From 2014 to 2018, the largest non-profit hospital system in Memphis, Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare, filed more than 8,300 debt lawsuits against low-income defendants who had little or no ability to pay. Since MLK50’s investigation, the hospital consumed the courts with notices to wipe away the debts of thousands of patients. Consumer advocates applauded the company’s policy change, even if it was the result of public pressure.
